Our History

In the late 1970s, Mr. Marvin Mostellar donated the land for a much needed medical facility in south Mobile County. Through his philanthropy and the forming of the Bayou La Batre Area Health Development Board (BLBAHDB), Mostellar Medical Center (MMC) was opened in February 1978.

BLBAHDB was incorporated on February 23, 1978 as a private, 501-C3 non-profit corporation. Upon receiving Federal 330 funding, MMC became a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and has provided uninterrupted services to south Mobile County since.

In May 1985, the Public Health Service in Atlanta, GA asked the BLBAHDB, Inc. to become a grantee for a troubled FQHC in McIntosh, AL. As a result, Southwest Alabama Health Services (SWAHS) became a part of the Mostellar Medical family.

Originally offering health services in internal medicine and pediatrics at MMC, a need for obstetrics and gynecology was realized and that division came to fruition in July 1987.

Further expansion occurred in 1995, when BLBAHDB, Inc. added a pediatric dental clinic and oral health services in Bayou La Batre. Today, those services are provided for south Mobile county through Family Health in Mobile, Alabama.

Upon opening, MMC had one provider and a five person support staff. Now, we are the largest FQHC in south Mobile County with 17 providers and a 63 person staff. SWAHS has two providers and a six person support staff. Today, BLBAHDB, Inc. is the governing board for both facilities.
